PRISTINE RULES OF INDUSTRIAL LAWS IN KARNATAKA

As many industries are heavily hit by the pandemic of COVID-19, in order to attract new investments and to benefit the existing industries, Karnataka Government has introduced new Industrial Policy.

Law and Parliamentary affairs minister has mentioned that this reformation will spare the industries which used to employ up to 300 workers, which was from the provision of the Act, raising the limit of current exemption for those who have 100 workers, as the employment opportunity in these times is very vital, so the changes in the industrial dispute act, 1947 was brought into effect.

In the times of this uncertain situation of COVID-19, Karnataka Government has brought in major reforms in Labor Law on July 2020, which included the Industrial Dispute Act 1947, the Contract Labor (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970 and Factories Act, 1948.

But the same was opposed the trade union because according to them it’s the violation of the labor rights and they think that it was an abrupt act by the Karnataka Cabinet. In addition to this, Karnataka Cabinet has come up with an ordinance which says that the industries or factories with less than 300 employees can close their businesses with the approval of the Government, and this was through the amendment made in the Industrial Dispute Act, 1947.

The above decisions taken by the State Government clearly depicts that it only concentrates only on the Industrial Law but not the Labor Laws. These new rules will be lenient for the industrialists who has labors working for them in less than 300 in numbers, which will be morally wrong for the laborers as the times of COVID-19 hasn’t been easy on anyone in the state and terminating the laborers will only bring a hike in the state of unemployment of people and also the poverty will be increases and isn’t going to help anyone in these crucial times.
