The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on Monday informed the Delhi High Court that an annual report of the data of transgender prisoners in jail will be made separately. The NCRB has classified transgenders as a separate third gender in its annual publication of prison statistics after a public suit was filed in the Delhi High Court.

Last week, the Delhi High Court asked the Central government about what steps have been taken by the government to include details of transgender prisoners in the Annual Prison Statistics Report 2019 and future reports.

While hearing a PIL, a bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan had also asked the Centre what steps have been taken on the issue brought to the notice of the government in September this year. The Delhi High Court had sought a reply from the government.

A week later, the NCRB informed the court that the government has decided to include details of transgender prisoners in the annual jail report and also created a separate category for it.

The PIL was filed by Karan Tripathi, a journalist, and independent researcher, in the Delhi High Court. The petition said the government needs to take steps to include details of transgender prisoners in the annual jail report.
