Considering the serious threat posed by the category 3 Cyclone Nivar, the District Magistrate of Puducherry has ordered imposition of Section 144 from 9 pm tonight till 6 am on November 26, in the entire Puducherry region.
As per the order, all shops and establishments will remain closed. Only milk stations, petrol stations, and pharmacies are allowed to operate.
A letter from the magistrate says that the Indian metrological department has warned about the possible impact of the Nivar cyclone along the coastline of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Puducherry is expected to be severely impacted by the cyclone and there is a grave danger to the life, health, or safety of the public.
Cyclone Nivar, which will likely become a "very severe cyclonic storm", is expected to make landfall Wednesday evening between Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu (which is around 56 km from the state capital Chennai) and Karaikal in Puducherry.
Nivar will bring extremely heavy rainfall and winds between 120 and 130 km per hour, with gusts of up to 145 km per hour, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has advised, adding that coastal areas could receive heavy rains till Thursday. This morning Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted to assure the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry governments - both have said tomorrow is a public holiday - of all possible support.
