Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) deals with the provision of control procedures to ensure safety and satisfaction for all customers. This organization implements strategies to remove the environment's toxic and dangerous elements. As a consequence of this, every customer is provided with an equivalent degree of food safety assurance. Under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, this autonomous body is created to monitor and govern the food business in India.
Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSS Act), which is consolidating legislation relating to food safety and regulation in India, the FSSAI was created. It ensures that quality controls are carried out on food goods, thereby reducing food adulteration and the selling of sub-standard products. It is responsible for the registration and licensing in India of Food Business Operators (FBO) and sets out the rules and regulations regulating the activity of the food business in India.
All food business operators engaged in the manufacture, processing, storage, and selling of food products are required to obtain an FSSAI Registration or License. The FSSAI Registration is different from the FSSAI License in the sense that the Food Business Operators can obtain the requisite registration or license depending on the size and nature of the company.
This is a 14-digit identification or license number printed on all packets of food. The 14 digit registration number provides specifics of the assembly state, the license of the maker. The purpose of this registration process is to increase the Food Business Operators' transparency in order to preserve the quality of food products. Food Safety & Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Business) Regulations, 2011, govern the licensing and registration process and specifications. The registration or license of the FSSAI is dependent on the amount of business and the premises. Applicant premises are eligible for licenses, such as basic licenses, central licenses, and state licenses, depending on the installed capacity or turnover, or venue. A business that is required to obtain registration under FSSAI is small -scale or cottage industries dealing in the food business, the temporary stallholder sells food, any person who distributes food except a caterer at any religious or social gathering, Petty retailer dealing in food products, Any FBO with an annual turnover of not more than Rs. 12 lakh and Any person who produces or sells any food products on his own.
The procedure for obtaining the registration starts with submitting Form A (application) to the Food and Safety Department. This application may be approved or denied by the Department within 7 days of the date of receipt of the request, and the applicant must be informed in writing of the rejection. If the application is approved, a registration certificate with the registration number and the applicant's photo will be released by the agency. During business hours, the Food Business Operators should prominently display the registration certificate at the business site.
The basic documents are photo id proof and passport photo. For State and Central license, additional documents are required.
