High Court of Andhra Pradesh passed an interim order to seize premises of LG Polymers

In vizag gas leak tragedy, Toxic styrene gas spewed out of the plant near the city of Visakhapatnam, killing at least 11 people and forcing 800 more to be hospitalized for treatment. Hundreds of victims remain in hospital. preliminary investigations concluded that the accident was likely the result of improper maintenance of units storing the styrene monomer, improper storage and operation errors. And by then the state and central government have filed affidavits after the case was taken for the suo moto the court also took multiple PILs filed on this incident. On Friday HC of Andhra passed an interim order to seize LG polymers company premises. No one including the is allowed to enter the premises including the director of the company and no asset shall be moved without any order by the court from the premises. In this interim direction by the HC they also seize the passports of the directors and their passports cannot be released without court’s order and they are not allowed to leave India until court’s next order. Though the directors already surrendered their passports. Every party who is involved in this case i.e., the state government, police, Vishakhapatnam district collector, the union government and the superintendent of king George hospital have been asked to file a compliance report by May 26 including LG Polymers.

The court also sought explanation from the government and LG Polymers on many issues such as, failure on LG Polymers part to obtain valid environmental clearance [EC] from Ministry of Environment, the improper functioning of refrigeration, failure of siren system, failure in evacuation process at an vulnerable zone and availability of hospitals in that area.

The court has also sought a reply from the government on the net worth of LG Polymers based on the provisions of Companies Act, and an explanation for the reason of transporting the styrene monomer back to South Korea before the appointment of an inspection team without the permission of the court.
