Google to invest $10 million in India

Google through its CEO has announced a massive Rs. 75,000 crore (which amounts to $10 billion) investment in India. This invest will be for digitalization of India. Google have even set up a fund called ‘Google for India Digitization Fund’ for the same cause. This announcement comes from Google for India 2020 campaign of Google Inc. The CEO, Mr. Sundar Pichai further stated that this investment will be made over the next 5 to 7 years. This investment would be made through equities, partnerships, operational infrastructure and ecosystem investments.

Mr. Pichai stated that the investment’s 4 main focus areas are:

  • Enabling access to information for every Indian citizen in the language suited to them.
  • Building new products and services that satisfy the needs and requirements of Indian citizens.
  • Empowerment of businesses and business ideas for achieving a complete digitalation of the nation.
  • Using technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for areas of social cause, such as health, education, etc.

Further Mr. Pichai also had a video conference with the Prime Minister of India discussing the same and numerous other issues. Minister of Communications, Electronics and IT, Law & Justice, Mr. Ravi Prasad also applauded this investment plan of Google and thanked them for the same while stating that such investments will help in digitalization of India.

This investment plan is based on the NDA Government’s plan of Digital India which aims at making India a digitalized nation. This would mean that everything would be digital, not just economic transactions but also education amongst other things. This campaign was launched back in 2015 by this Government which sought to ensure better online infrastructure as well as access to all Government and other services through online network. Services like AADHAR, BHIM, Digilocker, ArogyaSethu, etc. have been launched under this campaign and there will be many such services provided by the Government in the coming days in order to make Government services accessible to all from their homes with just a few taps.
